Hawaii wave kills Parker woman

Published October 14, 2008 at 12:05 a.m.

A 39-year-old woman from Parker drowned in Hawaii on Sunday when a huge wave knocked her off a ledge and into the ocean.

Tonya Cataldo, of Parker, and her sister-in-law, Heather Westphal, 33, of Washington, D.C., were pronounced dead and taken to a mortuary in Princeville on the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

They were walking along a ledge at Queen's Bath near Princeville about 3:30 Sunday afternoon when the large wave swept them out to sea, said Mary Daubert, spokeswoman for Kauai County. Westphal's husband, Jason, attempted a rescue, but the strong current forced him to return to shore.
