bgbrooks: good afternoon, mark
Mark_Wolf: And to you Mr. Brooks.
Buff4Live joined.
Mark_Wolf: Welcome Buff4live. What's on your mind?
bgbrooks: hello, buff4live
Big_Red joined.
bgbrooks: good afternoon, big red
Mark_Wolf: Welcome Big Red. What's on your mind?
Buff4Live: Obviously, I'm a Buff fan and a bit worried about this weekend's game. Any chance you see our o-line play improving this weekend? What have you guys seen/heard in Boulder?
Big_Red left.
bgbrooks: i think the play of the o-line will be improved, but only marginally. they just haven't had the time required yet to be efficient as a unit.
golden_buff joined.
Mark_Wolf: Welcome golden_buff.
bgbrooks: afternoon, golden buff
Buff4Live: I'm hoping to see at least average special teams play this weekend.
Buff4Live: it's been deplorable of late.
bgbrooks: right on the special teams . . . they've got to get better.
Buff4Live: I did see an interesting stat - we're 119th in the nation in kickoffs & KU is 119th in kickoff returns
Buff4Live: not sure if that's true, tho
golden_buff: Afternoon, I am concerned that the Buffs are relying on a pass first offense when they should be running the ball much more, I know DS is hurt and rodeny stewart can't carry the entire load but Cody has not shown that he can throw the ball this year, not once save a nice pass in the WV game, what do
Buff4Live: but if so, something's gotta give
bgbrooks: saw that, also . . . so do we expect a battle of the basement dwellers in that category?
bgbrooks: the run game is so dependent on the state of the o-line, i'm not sure even if darrell scott had been healthy for five weeks we'd see a great effort there. rodney s. is a bonus.
Buff4Live: that stat is what's strange, tho. That the 16th team in the nation is 119th in anything is a bit odd
Mark_Wolf: Colorado is a two-touchdown underdog to Kansas tomorrow. If the Buffs struggle on offense, how early might we see Matt Ballenger replace Cody Hawkins at quarterback?
golden_buff: Agreed, the O line is shot but we need some kind of offense
bgbrooks: yeah, but national stats can be skewed.
Buff4Live: good point wolf
golden_buff: sticking with the pass is not the answer, Scotty McKnight is a possesion reciever
Buff4Live: I'd say not until the 2nd half
golden_buff: Pat Williams hates catching the ball and Josh smith is still too raw
Buff4Live: unless you get 3 bonehead picks in the 1st half
bgbrooks: i think ballenger gets a look regardless. coaches want him to gain some meaningful experience.
Mark_Wolf: How has that father-son/coach-quarterback dynamic been playing out in Boulder?
Buff4Live: Coach Hawkins will get his wins.
Buff4Live: Little Hawk, we'll see. He needs a line, though.
bgbrooks: it's had some touchy -- and i don't mean touchy feely -- moments. cody has really gotten clocked on several occasions, and i can see it register with big hawk.
golden_buff: bg, what do you think the game plan is for the weekend?
Buff4Live: I hadn't noticed that. Or, at least, I hadn't seen it register beyond "my qb got clocked", not "my son got clocked". what's your basis for that statement?
bgbrooks: offensively, i think cu believes it can pass on ku. but that depends on cody's protection and his efficiency.
golden_buff: WHat about the run game, why not try and control the clock
bgbrooks: just being around hawk and seeing how he reacts to various things.
bgbrooks: of course, the buffs will try and establish the run -- always do. but i'm just saying they think the passing game will be there.
Buff4Live: I agree - running the ball and dumping to TEs seems to be a better strategy than throw
bgbrooks: all part of the pass strategy -- but it depends on the run.
golden_buff: Good te's and good running backs lets play to our strengths
bgbrooks: that would be a sound plan
Buff4Live: do you see cody's pass protection as the key to a win?
golden_buff: But I have a feeling we will come out with 4 or 5 straight passes and when things get rough we will go to a running game that everyone in the stadium know is going up the middle.
bgbrooks: right up there -- along with containing reesing.
Mark_Wolf left.
Mark_Wolf joined.
Buff4Live: the old dan reeves special
bgbrooks: i don't 4-5 straight passes is in the offing. hawk is a run-first guy, but i'll say it again, the passing game could be there.
Buff4Live: intersting. think they'll cover?
Buff4Live: not that you bet
bgbrooks: yes
Buff4Live: just asking
Buff4Live: hmm
bgbrooks: no, not that i bet . . .
Buff4Live: that's saying a lot after 2 sound defeats
Buff4Live: but I like it!!!
golden_buff: I think we will win tomorrow
golden_buff: Always play well against KU
bgbrooks: yeah, but fsu's d-line was beastly, as was the horns'.
golden_buff: They are over rated this year anyway
seanvstr joined.
Buff4Live: i like cody in the 4th when the games on the line. that's when he's at his best
bgbrooks: welcome seanvstr
Mark_Wolf: That's why bookies drive Cadillacs.
Buff4Live: lol
Buff4Live: good one
bgbrooks: and that's why sports writers ride bikes.
seanvstr: thanks..what are we chattin about
Buff4Live: CU stomping the Gayhawks
bgbrooks: cu-ku -- all things
Mark_Wolf: Although I'd rather put my money on the Buffs than on the Dow Jones.
Buff4Live: i mean jayhawks
Buff4Live: :)
golden_buff: What happened to the best DT tandem in the Big 12, havent seen much from them this year
Mark_Wolf: sure you do
bgbrooks: let's not talk economics. my 401k is dying
Buff4Live: golden - agreed
seanvstr: or what happend to darrell scott?
golden_buff: injured
golden_buff: overweight
Buff4Live: I hear hypolite is getting double-teamed a lot
golden_buff: needs to study
golden_buff: True but NFL caliber players make plays
bgbrooks: hypolite is drawing a lot of attention, but nicolas must be playing well enough to allow goree to go to offense
Mark_Wolf: BG, after last weekend's wedding all my money is in Visa at 18%.
Buff4Live: DS is a work in progress. maybe hes having too much fun in boulder. give him a year or two. not like westbrook and salaam were studs as frosh.
bgbrooks: scott now has a bum ankle, but he'll play
seanvstr: BG, any thoughts on the CSU/TCU game?
golden_buff: DS has had flashes of brillance but you can tell he doesn;t know the offense
Buff4Live: good point about goree
Mark_Wolf: Wonder how Scott will respond to Stewart's emergence as The Man?
bgbrooks: wedding bell blues
Buff4Live: that leap in the EW game was awesome
golden_buff: Awesome!
Buff4Live: indeed
bgbrooks: when scott is healthy, the response will be worth listening to. or watching.
golden_buff: running into Josh Smith against FSU and allowing a pick not awesome
Buff4Live: don't remember those, but i'll trust ya
golden_buff: that was on one play
Buff4Live: ouch
Buff4Live: game?
Mark_Wolf: Seanvstr, I think CSU is going to have a tough time scoring enough points to keep up with TCU.
bgbrooks: i'll file those under youthful mistakes
seanvstr: agree, did you see the numbers they held oklahoma to?
Buff4Live: good point. and we don't have anough 4-5* dudes right now to make up for those type of mistakes
golden_buff: We need some consistency, 4 full quarters of consistent solid football, can't remember the last time CU had that
seanvstr: .7 yards a rush
bgbrooks: the 4-5* guys are on the horizon -- not that hawk pays attention to the star system
Mark_Wolf: ouch
Buff4Live: CSU was close, but not a full 4
bgbrooks: cu hasn't had four good quarters for a while, wvu was close, though
Mark_Wolf: Maybe Sonny Lubick is a little bit glad he's gone.
sb joined.
Buff4Live: i agree - totally love the hawk. much much better than the last 2-3 years of barnett. we just need to win at least 7 games this year
bgbrooks: welcome, sb
golden_buff: WVU was solid defensively but no offense after the first 5 min
bgbrooks: agreed on wvu, but still a good win for buffs
golden_buff: I think we can beat KU, KSU, ISU, NU and the rest are toss ups
seanvstr: anyone think hawk's extention was a bit premature? seems like everyone is giving him the benefit of the doubt
Buff4Live: I say we beast KSU, A&M, ISU and NU
golden_buff: He has been recruiting the best athletes CU has had in a decade, let him get them on the field and he will succeed
Mark_Wolf: I disagree. You have to have some long-term stability for recruiting if nothing else.
Buff4Live: OSU is a potential upset as it's in Folsom.
bgbrooks: don't think the extension was premature . . . lock him up and let him continue to recruit.
golden_buff: Definetely want recruits to know you will be there for 4 years
seanvstr: not saying he hasn't recruited well...
Buff4Live: agree - extension was a must
Mark_Wolf: Disagreement is with senvstr's notion that the extension was premature.
golden_buff: Needs time to implement his system, still playing mostly freshman, good time for an extension
bgbrooks: i wouldn't count neb as a sure win, by any means.
Buff4Live: need to show recruits he'll be there
golden_buff: True Neb will be tough but we are further along than them, think we have a better team
Mark_Wolf: Remember, CU's best football decision maybe in its history was giving Bill McCartney the chance to build slowly.
bgbrooks: i do too, at this point, but by then, how many o-linemen will cu have left?
Buff4Live: seems like we always need Olinemen
Mark_Wolf: If Kansas controls the line of scrimmage tomorrow it's going to be a long day in Lawrence for the Buffs.
bgbrooks: patience is the name of the game now in college football. look at ku and mu, mangino and pinkel.
Buff4Live: i agree, but we have to win 7 this year,
Mark_Wolf: Is Ryan Miller pretty much guaranteed an injury redshirt year since he was hurt in the fourth game? How does that work?
seanvstr: it's still strange to think of kansas as a legit football school
bgbrooks: right, wolf man . . .
bgbrooks: yeah, but legitimacy is there
Buff4Live: I say CU pulls off the upset tomorrow. CU 20 KU 16
Mark_Wolf: Mangino's done a great job turning that program around, especially at a basketball school.
bgbrooks: i think the upset potential is there, too.
seanvstr: wasn't ku's win last year vs. cu the first in forever?
Buff4Live: since 1995? it was in 2006
Buff4Live: i think
Buff4Live: ?
bgbrooks: not forever, ku has won the last two, after cu won from 2001-05
Buff4Live: ah
seanvstr: got ya..im live in fort collins
golden_buff: I think Ballenger should get some significant playing time this weekend, perhaps 4 drives or so, thoughts?
Buff4Live: hey, gotta run, hope you guys do this next week - same bat time, same bat channel
Buff4Live: god i'm old
bgbrooks: i think he'll get time, but i don't think big hawk will jeopardize winning if little hawk is succeeding.
Mark_Wolf: Seems they at least have to answer the question of whether he can compete for the starting job.
Buff4Live left.
golden_buff: Maybe Tyler Hansen, why redshirt him when we have 2 qbs coming in next year
bgbrooks: yeah, but you don't want to do that and jeopardize a `W.'
Buffs1990 joined.
seanvstr: whats the line
Mark_Wolf: Agreed. If Cody is playing well, no reason to switch just for the sake of switching.
bgbrooks: welcome, buffs1990
golden_buff: When does he pull Lil Hawl then? After a pick or after a successful drive?
Buffs1990: Hello
bgbrooks: obviously, after the pick -- but don't expect the immediate hook
Mark_Wolf: Pulling a quarterback in a competitive game is a dicey situation.
Mark_Wolf: Lots of psychological stuff at play.
golden_buff: Thats the thing, he lets lil hawk play until the game is out of hand and then the playing time is garbage, 2 qbs is difficult thing to manage
bgbrooks: i don't think big hawk would go for that
Buffs1990: BG how is Lynn Katoa doing in practice?
bgbrooks: yeah, it's difficult to manage, but they'll try something
bgbrooks: katoa is getting some scout work, but i haven't keyed on him too much. fact he's still here is good.
golden_buff: ANy recruiting news about Montaze Burfict or Randall Carroll? Any real chance with them? WHo is recruiting them? Hagan?
sb left.
bgbrooks: don't know who's handling those two . . . no inside word.
Buffs1990: Any big recruits we have a chance with that we might not know about yet?
golden_buff: How is Cunningham progressing, he was a great pick up last year and it looks like he could be a star really soon, is Hawk going to keep working him in?
bgbrooks: per recru -- most of the big names have been mentioned on the net sites
bgbrooks: cunningham seems to be progressing well, although his playing still kind of mystifies me.
Buffs1990: I don't know about you guys but I love the pipeline Hawk has with Columbine
Mark_Wolf: Hawkins said on our live chat two weeks ago that Cunningham is going to get more time. He's playing because they don't think he can get much bigger/stronger than he is now.
seanvstr left.
bgbrooks: hawk has a pipeline with most of the area schools . . . he really works the state.
Mark_Wolf: Here's a name to keep in mind from what's become a nice Columbine pipeline to Boulder: the Rebels' junior quarterback Dan Spond. Big, strong, fabulous arm and very smart.
golden_buff: What are our chances while lil hawk is firmly entrenched
bgbrooks: heard the same things about spond, and i think a local QB would be responsive.
Buffs1990: I know, I coach at Horizon. He is fantastic with all the coaches I talk to
golden_buff: Spond could be the missing link
Mark_Wolf: When Ryan Miller was being recruited by Notre Dame, Hawk brought virtually his entire staff to Columbine the day after Weis was in.
Buffs1990: Spond = real deal
golden_buff: Any word on Kasa
bgbrooks: on the QB competition -- watch what happens in spring '09 with the competition. could be very interesting.
tcd14 joined.
bgbrooks: nothing new on kasa . . . seems to have expanded his list from cu/fla
bgbrooks: welcome tcd14
Mark_Wolf: I'll be a minority contributor. Think Cody can do the job when the o-line is healthy and functioning.
bgbrooks: i think can be even more competent with healthy pieces around him.
Mark_Wolf: The two touychdown throws he made against West Virginia were as good as anybody can make.
golden_buff: But competent won;t win the Big 12 we need a stud qb
Buffs1990: Cody is good, the problem is the big 12 is loaded with qb talent. Most important position on the field
bgbrooks: agreed . . . as big hawk says, cody was throwin' seeds.
golden_buff: Need a qb who scares defenses not one who whets their appetite
bgbrooks: cody has hit a couple weeks of rough spots, but i still think he can play.
Mark_Wolf: BG, you think the Big 12 is the best conference inthe country right now?
Mark_Wolf: Andy anybody else?
Mark_Wolf: And anybody else?
Buffs1990: Average Qbs can do well with the right pieces around them
bgbrooks: offensively, yes. defensively, look at the sec. seems to have flipflopped.
golden_buff: Big 12 is the best bar none
Buffs1990: OU and Texas are in a league of there own
golden_buff: Missouri too
bgbrooks: looking forward to saturday at the state fair
Mark_Wolf: Who wins that game tomorrow?
Buffs1990: I am not sold on the Tigers D
golden_buff: OU
Buffs1990: OU
bgbrooks: i picked texas this morning in print, so i'll stay there.
Mark_Wolf: I like Texas at home.
Buffs1990: Take the points!
bgbrooks: i like colt mccoy and will muschamp -- the DC
golden_buff: What about the running game
golden_buff: and secondary
bgbrooks: could be a horns weakness . . . i think the secondary will hold up.
golden_buff: 3 freshman against those OU receivers, scary
bgbrooks: yeah, but they react very well.
golden_buff: Who's better McCoy or Bradford?
Buffs1990: What are the chances of Miller getting a medical redshirt?
bgbrooks: mccoy is the better dual QB . . . bradford the better pocket guy
Buffs1990: Bradford
golden_buff: McCoy got really fast, that is something I don't think OU wil be expecting
bgbrooks: hawk says miller and mtm will qualify
Buffs1990: Better passer
bgbrooks: bradford is the better pure passer
Mark_Wolf: I’m wearing my Ball State sweatshirt with pride (my brother-in-law is a professor there). How ‘bout them Cardinals cracking the Top 25? Can they be this year’s Boise State?
bgbrooks: no . . . ball state has letterman and nothing else
golden_buff: They havent played anyone
golden_buff: Indiana? Navy? come on
Mark_Wolf: Go Cardinals!!!! Ignore the skeptics!!!! ::laugh
golden_buff: I like the optimism though!
Buffs1990: Has anyone else heard Hawkins name mentioned with a possible Tennessee opening?
tcd14: i want to get some thoughts on the Buffs playcalling (my view is its terrible). it seems to me given say a third and eight they will consistently call a play that will net them 4 yards they know they can get and then pray they player can make up the other 4 yards
bgbrooks: nothing on hawk and tennessee . . . don't see that as a fit. hawk's a western guy.
golden_buff: Play calling is borderline horrible; get the ball into the hands of your playmakers
golden_buff: NOT Cody!
Buffs1990: So few playmaker though
bgbrooks: per the play calling . . . give the babies (not the coaches) time to grow up.
golden_buff: Trial by fire, that will help them get better!
Mark_Wolf: I was with a bunch of Tennessee fans last weekend and they're incredibly bummed about their team/program. But agree with BG that Hawk's not going anywhere.
bgbrooks: turn up the heat . . . fire is good.
golden_buff: Hawk is not a good fit for Tenn, see him staying in Boulder for a while
Buffs1990: good, Boulder needs hawk!
Buffs1990: How big of a loss was Simas not making the grades?
golden_buff: HUGE, he was awesome at the spring game
bgbrooks: simas could have really helped . . . he's now a great scout team player. what a shame.
golden_buff: Need a big win for recruiting, need another top 25 class to get things rolling!
Buffs1990: Hope he can pull it together then
bgbrooks: it's up to him. the coaches were really disappointed in him.
golden_buff: Kansas would be a good start, show we are still a force in the Big 12
Buffs1990: Who would have thought that the Huskers and Cu could be at the bottom of the big 12 north and Mizz and Kansas would be at the top
1BUFFFAN joined.
bgbrooks: and of the top teams in the north, kansas is the one to beat. the other one . . . long day in columbia.
Buffs1990: Bad enough those guys kick our butts in basketball
golden_buff: What are the chances we start using a 2 back i formation with stewart and scott
bgbrooks: the north world has turned upside down . . .
bgbrooks: welcome, 1bufffan
tcd14 left.
bgbrooks: don't think stewart and scott in the same backfield will be seen for a while. need the good blocker, and neither qualifies at this point.
Buffs1990: If Iowa St gets up there with Kansas and Mizz the world might just come to an end
bgbrooks: i like chizik, but i don't think he can outrecruit hawk.
1BUFFFAN: Everyone said 09 would be the year, why are people panicking already?
Mark_Wolf: Agree about the blocking but what's the chance of getting Stewart/Scott in the slot to get both of them in the game.
bgbrooks: in the slot might be a solution, but they both have so much to learn.
Buffs1990: Nice talking to everyone, here is a name to keep an eye on. josh Bredl, 6'7 250 lb TE from Horizon High in Thornton. He will be a Buff, Cowboy or Bosie Stae Bronco. ....... Go Buffs!
bgbrooks: right 1bufffan . . . panic seems to have taken hold, when most people were saying in august the schedule would permit 7 wins at best
bgbrooks: thanks for your time, buffs1990
Mark_Wolf: If they don't get 7, Florida State is going to be The One That Got Away.
1BUFFFAN: Should we can summler or is he too good of a blocker?
bgbrooks: sumler has a role to fill . . . and, yes, it is blocking.
bgbrooks: people might forget about brian lockridge and ray polk -- both are redshirtting.
1BUFFFAN: is scott supposed to b 100% Sat? It'd be nice to see his "breakout" game
bgbrooks: scott will play . . . don't know about being 100% though.
bgbrooks: we're out of time, fellows. make this the last round.
1BUFFFAN: whats our shot at a dubya tomorrow?
bgbrooks: decent . . . i think cu and play with the hawks.
Mark_Wolf: Thanks to BG and all our participants for a lively hour.
1BUFFFAN: Thanks BG!
bgbrooks: make that . . . can play with the hawks
bgbrooks: you're welcome. have a good weekend, all.
