Driver killed in Boulder after semi crash

Published September 12, 2007 at midnight

A pickup truck driver was killed Tuesday morning after he ran a stop sign and crashed into a semi tractor trailer on Colo. 119 in Boulder County.

Kirk Johannsen, 36, of Golden was taken to Boulder Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The semi truck driver, David Watson, 42, of Evans, was treated for minor injuries at Boulder Community Hospital and released Tuesday.

The accident happened around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday. Johannsen's blue 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck was going west on Independence Road, when he failed to stop at the stop sign at Colo. 119.

His truck ran into a white 2007 Freighliner tractor trailer driven by Watson that was going northeast on Colo. 119.

The collision pushed the Ford truck in a northerly direction after impact, and rolled one and half times before it ended up on its top, just north of the roadway. The tractor trailer continued north and wound up in the southbound lanes of Colo. 119.

Johannsen, who was not wearing a seat belt, had to be extricated from his truck. Watson was restrained.

Alcohol, drugs and speed are not suspected as contributing factors.
