Lawn logo roots for Rockies
Published October 20, 2007 at midnight
Carve your lawn with the Colorado Rockies logo to show your support of the National League champs. Getting your grass to look like Coors Field can be easy - grass lying flat and pointing away from the viewer looks light in color, while grass standing up and leaning slightly toward the viewer looks dark.
The results will be subtle up close but easy to see from farther away or above, so plan to place this where you or your neighbors can enjoy the view. Dr. Tony Koski, Colorado State University Extension turf specialist guided us in the creation of this sporty lawn. Ready? Grab a rake, garden hoses, bricks and a large, flat cardboard box and follow these steps:
Start by mowing the lawn all in one direction - away from the viewer - then flatten by dragging the cardboard, weighted down by bricks, across the grass in the same direction you mowed. Tip: Mow high.
Lay the garden hoses on the lawn in the pattern you want to carve; they'll serve as the guide for raking the design. Make your pattern large enough to rake out a foot from each side of the hose. Tip: Keep the grass flat by laying boards or bricks along the outside edge of the pattern and walk on them as you rake. Your design will stand out more, and you won't have to re-flatten the grass.
Working from the interior first, rake the grass up along the hose until it leans slightly toward the viewer. As you follow the design, keep checking to ensure that the grass is leaning in the same direction. Tip: A soil rake works well for standing the grass, but take care not to rip the turf from the ground.
Finish by removing the hose and any boards, then view it from above with a ladder or from an upper-story window. If a few spots need extra fluffing, don't worry - any mistakes are easily erased by smoothing the area and raking the grass up again. Tip: Touch up the design by walking on the flat grass every morning.
