State title caps perfect season for Brush's Munoz

Published February 18, 2007 at midnight

Almost anything can be found on the Internet these days. Brush wrestler Rafael Munoz found inspiration.

Perusing various message boards before the start of the season, Munoz saw where people were picking Roosevelt as the team to beat in Class 3A. That lit a fire under Munoz and his teammates on the Beatdiggers, and Saturday night at the Pepsi Center they emphatically proved the Internet prognosticators wrong.

Munoz capped a perfect 18-0 season, edging Brandon Montoya (33-8) of Roosevelt 6-3 in the 145-pound championship match to help Brush win its first team championship in school history.

"On the message boards I heard people saying Roosevelt was the best team, but I told them since football we were going to take it all," Munoz said. "Last year I wasn?t here, but I came back to give coach (Dave) Uhrig a state title. We deserve it."

Munoz spent last season in Iowa, where he racked up a 37-4 record but failed to make it out of sectionals. After sitting out the first part of this season, Munoz went on a tear, ending with the win over Montoya on Saturday night.

"This was my goal, and it finally came true," Munoz said. "I love this sport."

Munoz was one of four Brush wrestlers to win individual titles, as Cody Cole (119), Aaron Quinlin (171) and Nick Dreitz (215) also took home championships for the Beetdiggers.

Roosevelt, which pushed Brush for the team lead through all three days of the tournament, won three titles, but it wasn?t enough to get to the Roughriders to the top of the standings. The Beetdiggers outpaced Roosevelt 193-170.

Dan Frank (125), P.J. Gallegos (130) and Tim Frank (152) won championships for the Roughriders.

In the night?s most exciting match, John Bailey (38-1) of Florence outlasted Ross Leyba (21-6) of La Junta 16-12 to grab the 112 pound championship. Bailey had an 11-2 lead heading into the third period, but was quickly reversed and put on his back by Leyba to start the third.

Bailey was millimeters from being stuck for close to a minute, but he was able to fight it off and score a reversal of his own midway with under a minute remaining.

Leyba, who won the 103-pound title in 2005, came off his back to reverse Bailey again with about 12 seconds to go, and was looking to the referee to slap the mat but time ran out.

Afterward, both wrestlers appeared worse for the wear as Bailey struggled to get his warmup on and Leyba battled hand cramps from the exertion.

"I wasn?t sure how the points would come out after he put me on my back like that," said Bailey, a sophomore. "I knew I wasn?t stuck; I was just hoping the refs would make the right decision. Luckily he did."

Leyba, who pinned his three other opponents in the tournament, thought he had Bailey flat on the mat on more than one occasion.

"I had him pinned on his back and I was waiting for (the referee) to call it but he never did," Leyba said. "If I would?ve had another 15 seconds I would have got him. I think I had him anyway, but there?s nothing to be ashamed of."

Mitchell Polkowske of Centauri wrapped up one of the best individual seasons in Colorado history by going 48-0, winning the 135-pound title by besting Justin Prieto of Monte Vista 12-1. The 48 victories ties Tyler Graff of Loveland for the most wins without a loss in a single season in Colorado.

Lance Gallegos of Arrupe Jesuit picked up his second consecutive state title when he beat Micky Koonce of Florence 14-6 in the 140-pound championship match.

"It means a lot to come out and win twice in a row," Gallegos said.
