Haggard engaged in 'sordid conversations and relationships'
Published February 18, 2007 at midnight
A number of individuals have come through with "firsthand knowledge" of Ted Haggard's struggle with a "dark side," church leaders told the disgraced pastors former flock this morning.
"We have verified the reality of that struggle through numerous individuals who reported to us firsthand knowledge of everything from sordid conversation to overt suggestions to improper activities to improper relationships," the Rev. Larry Stockstill, a church overseer, told congregants at each of two morning services.
"These findings established a pattern of behavior that culminated in the final relationship in which Ted was, as a matter of grace, caught," Stockstill continued.
The report was part of a two-and-a-half page letter updating the 14,000-member congregation on how the mega-church has been doing since Haggard admitted last November to methamphetamine purchases and "sexual impropriety" involving a male prostitute.
The letter also said the churchs board of trustees had "fairly and compassionately" decided to financially support the Haggard family through 2007. It was previously announced that Haggard and his wife, Gayle, will relocate to another state within the next few months to continue therapy and to pursue psychology degrees.
The letter also said "unrelated sin issues" have been uncovered among a few staff during a widespread employee review launched because of the Haggard scandal.
"I can report we have found a few staff members struggling with unrelated sin issues," the letter says. "Each such person has been confronted and has submitted to discipline."
Church leaders said afterwards that none of those staff issues appeared to be sexual in nature.
During the staff review in December, Christopher Beard, the director of the churchs "twentyfourseven" group for young Christian leaders admitted to "sexual misconduct with an adult" and was removed from his job.
