Europe may be in Nuggets' future

Published February 18, 2007 at midnight

LAS VEGAS _ The Nuggets won’t be starring next fall in a sequel to European Vacation, but they could be packing their bags in a future year.

The NBA announced Saturday that Boston, Memphis, Minnesota and Toronto will head overseas for training camp next October as part of NBA Europe Live. But while the Nuggets, who have had discussions with the league about being involved, weren’t picked this time, an NBA executive stressed they be patient.

"We talked to them,’’ Ski Austin, the league’s senior vice president of events and attractions, said during All-Star Weekend. "When we talk about teams, it’s not always for a specific year. When we talk to teams, we ask if this is something that’s on the radar, that they’re interested in doing. . . Denver has always been a team that’s willing. . . They’re still on the list.’’

Boston will hold camp in Rome, Memphis is Malaga, Spain, Minnesota in Istanbul, Turkey and Toronto in Treviso, Italy. In addition to Rome, Malaga and Istanbul, there will be exhibition games in October in London and Madrid.

Nuggets coach George Karl last fall expressed interest in having training camp in Spain, where he once coached.

"They’re a very easy team to work with,’’ Austin said of the Nuggets. "They really understand the advantages of having a global brand and being representatives of the league. We enjoy working with them tremendously.’’

Austin said the Nuggets, who played Golden State last October in Monterrey, Mexico, are not candidates this fall for a preseason game outside the U.S. or Canada. But he said it’s not out of the question a Euroleague team again could visit the Pepsi Center.

Turkey’s Efes Pilsen came to Denver last October. Austin said the NBA is involved in discussions to see which Euroleague teams might be interested this fall in coming to America.

ETC.: There has been talked of expanding All-Star rosters from 12 to 15. While NBA commissioner David Stern confirmed there has been discussion, he doesn’t see rosters increasing. "Frankly, even with 12 people, we have trouble getting minutes (for All-Stars),’’ he said. "So expanding the roster would be even more difficult.’’ ? Detroit guard and Denver native Chauncey Billups, who will make his second All-Star appearance Sunday, has plenty of family members in Las Vegas. "I’ve got about 20 something of my cousins and family here,’’ Billups said. "I don’t know if I’m going to get them into the game, but they’re enjoying the festivities.’’ ? Austin said the NBA is considering six cities to host the 2009 All-Star Game, but wouldn’t name them. Cities that have been mentioned previously as possible candidates include Charlotte, Memphis, Phoenix, Toronto and Milwaukee. Stern expressed concern Saturday about whether there are enough hotel rooms to have the game in Charlotte or Milwaukee. Next year’s game is in New Orleans.
