College Coaches Online

•Search tool for high school athletes interested in playing college sports

Price: $20-$60

Where you can get it: Web site

Business owner: Andy Gold

Location: Lakewood

Tidbits: Gold launched his Web site in 2003 to save high school students the hours of research his own son did when trying to find names and contact information for college baseball coaches.

"I keep track of over 400 sports and 25,000 head coaching positions at more than 1,800 colleges," Gold said. "I also have a contract with the NCAA to maintain their database of college coaches."

The fields required to search for coaches are type of sport, level of competition and region or state the student wants to attend college.

Users then select "Find Your Colleges" and schools appear ranked by academic admission standards.

Once a school is chosen, a page containing the coach's direct contact information and basic information on the school comes up.

"High school students have to market themselves to be seen and considered by college coaches." added Gold. "And that's what makes this site so valuable."

Overnight birthday cakes

Prices: $69.99 and $89.99

Where you can get it: Web site

Business owner: KieAnn Brownell

Location: Greenwood Village

Tidbits: You've just remembered your best friend's birthday is tomorrow, but the last thing you want to send is a "Sorry I forgot your birthday" card. A far better alternative could be to overnight him or her a scrumptious chocolate cake.

Brownell says she originally came up with the idea when she was in college. She revisited the concept in fall 2004, and after spending several months narrowing her list of top 50 wholesale bakers to the best two, she launched the company a year ago.

"Each cake is shipped out frozen from our office, arriving just in time to eat," Brownell said. "It's a way of connecting people and creating spontaneous celebration."

The company sells five flavors; two of the cakes are available in 9 inches, and three are available in 10 inches. Each one arrives in a lime-green box with plates, forks, napkins, serving plate and server, confetti and candles. The company also features "Party Online" - a way of gathering birthday greetings via e-mail, which are sent to recipients on their special day.
