Larimer County sheriff vows to cut back on inmates

Published February 16, 2007 at midnight

The Larimer County Detention Center is going to put a cap on the number of inmates it houses — about 50 fewer than are in the jail on an given day.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reports that Sheriff Jim Alderden said at a meeting of the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee that he’s capping the number at 450 inmates.

He said the move is needed to ensure safety for both his deputies and the inmates.

Currently, there are parts of the jail that have one deputy overseeing 88 or 90 inmates, Alderden said.

To cut down, Alderden said he may refuse to book misdemeanor and nonviolent felony offenders, only set aside a certain number of beds for parole violators, and consider early release for prisoners.

Alderden said he will go to the Larimer County Commissioners for $550,000 this year and twice as much next year to hire 15 additional deputies.
