Rub-a-dub Cubs flub: Wood slips in hot tub

Oft-injured Kerry Wood is out again - this time because of a fall in a hot tub.

The Chicago Cubs pitcher is not expected to throw off the mound for a few days after he slipped this week getting out of a hot tub at home. Wood landed on his stomach and chest.

"It was just a little spill," Wood said Thursday. "I didn't think anything of it. Nothing's wrong. It's just going to be a few extra days."

BONDS FINALLY SIGNS Barry Bonds signed his one-year, $15.8 million contract and it was approved by the commissioner's office, ending more than two months of wrangling between the left fielder and the San Francisco Giants about contract language.

With both sides satisfied, Bonds is scheduled to report Monday to spring training. He is likely to participate in the Giants' first full-squad workout Tuesday.

ZITO WORRIES GIANTS Barry Zito unveiled a different delivery on his first day with the Giants, making at least one of his new coaches a little nervous.

Pitching coach Dave Righetti went as far as to say the tweaks Zito made this winter could cause him to lose his dominant curveball and produce more wear on his body.

YANKEES PARTNER ARRESTED New York Yankees general partner Steve Swindal, George Steinbrenner's son-in-law and designated successor to run ballclub, was arrested in St. Petersburg, Fla., on a charge of driving under the influence. He was released on bond.

LIDLE REMEMBERED The Yankees will honor the memory of pitcher Cory Lidle, who died Oct. 11 in a plane crash, by wearing black arm bands on the left sleeves of their uniforms this season.

TORRE'S BROTHER ILL Former major leaguer Frank Torre, the brother of Yankees manager Joe Torre, needs a kidney transplant because of medication he's taken since receiving a new heart more than a decade ago.

CUDDYER AGREES Right fielder Michael Cuddyer and the Minnesota Twins agreed to a one-year, $3,575,000 contract.

CHARGERS INTERVIEWS Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, the son of former NFL coach Buddy Ryan, and San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner interviewed with executives of the San Diego Chargers about the team's coaching job.

COWHER JOINS CBS Former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher will be an analyst for CBS on the network's The NFL Today studio show next season.

REID SON CHARGED Garrett Reid, 23, a son of Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid, was charged with 14 misdemeanor offenses stemming from a high-speed traffic accident in suburban Philadelphia on Jan. 30, including assault, drug possession and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

WHITFIELD RETIRES New York Giants offensive tackle Bob Whitfield announced his retirement, ending a three-team, 15-year career.

KNIGHT REPRIMANDED Texas Tech basketball coach Bob Knight was issued a public reprimand by the Big 12 Conference for his comments about officiating in a double-overtime loss at Oklahoma State.

BROYLES' DECISION University of Arkansas trustees will meet Saturday amid reports by two state television stations that athletic director Frank Broyles will offer to resign the end of this year, wrapping up a 50-year career amid turmoil in the Razorbacks' football program.
