Published February 16, 2007 at midnight
The Colorado State Capitol dome is opening for public tours again starting Tuesday after a five-year hiatius. The gold-clad dome was closed in October 2001 due to security concerns and for refurbishing.
Lawmakers got a sneak peak of the dome on Friday.
In 1885, lawmakers earmarked $200,000 per year for five years for construction of the Capitol. Eight years after construction began, the governor's office opened, even though the building was was not finished. The Capitol was finally complete at a cost of $2.8 million in 1908.
Copper originally covered the dome, but gold leaf was applied in
1908. It has been regilded in 1949, 1980, and 1991.
