The drive, part II
Published June 25, 2007 at midnight
John Elway is a champion again. On Sunday night, the man who quarterbacked the Broncos to victories in Super Bowls XXXII and XXXIII won the ABC reality show Fast Cars & Superstars: Gillette Young Guns Celebrity Race. A recap:
Sunday's players (in order of appearance): Singer/songwriter Jewel, former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, pro skateboarder Tony Hawk, rodeo legend Ty Murray, three-time WWE champion John Cena and Elway.
The event: In the final round, the celebrity drivers followed their NASCAR Young Gun pacesetter for five laps around the 1 1/2-mile track that included a pit stop on Lap 3 in which two tires were changed and the car gassed up. In the finale, speed rules.
The track: Lowe's Motor Speedway, Concord, N.C.
How Jewel fared: She "rubbed" the wall during her warm-up lap before the green flag but was not adversely affected. As the first driver, she turned in an impressive 19-second pit stop. Her Young Gun driver was Jamie McMurray.
How Cowher fared: Things didn't go well for the former coach, who ended up finishing last after stalling his car leaving the pit stop and turned in a fastest average lap of 139 mph, slowest of all the competitors. Young Gun driver: Ryan Newman.
How Hawk fared: Though he turned in the fastest average lap, 151 mph, after his pit stop, he also had the slowest pit time, 26 seconds. He stalled his car leaving the pit area when he put his foot on the brake instead of the clutch. Young Gun driver: Jimmie Johnson.
How Murray fared: The exuberant cowboy bumped his Young Gun pacesetter at the start of his warm-up lap but otherwise drove an impressive race en route to moving atop the standings. Afterward, his girlfriend, Jewel, said, "Your pit stop (16 seconds) was smoking." So was his doughnut in the infield after his final lap. Young Gun driver: Kasey Kahne.
How Cena fared: The champion wrestler drove a solid race and, like Murray, did a doughnut in the infield. Though he lost control during the doughnut, he exited his car to the crowd chanting his name. Young Gun driver: Carl Edwards.
How Elway fared: He started so aggressively in his Cars.com ride that Fast Cars co-host Brad Daugherty offered on Lap 2, "Throughout the competition, he's been kind of midpack. I think he's been playing a little possum with us, because he is laying down some serious heat on this racetrack right now." Jewel offered: "Oh, to go last." Elway combined the best pit stop, 15 seconds, with the No. 2 fastest average lap, 149 mph, for a total time of 3 minutes, 39.31 seconds to best Murray. He kept to his pre-race strategy: "I'm going to go as fast as I can but also try to be smart about it and make sure I don't make any mistakes when I come in for the pit stop." Young Gun driver: Kurt Busch.
In Elway's words (pre-race): "It's a lot more nerve-racking than starting a Super Bowl, that's for sure."
In Elway's words (post-race, while in his car listening to chants of El-way): "Ahhhh. What a blast. Let's go again."
Big surprise: Elway's girlfriend, Paige Green, donned a T-shirt inscribed Elway or No Way! "It's a lucky shirt," she said.
Final word: In presenting the trophy to Elway, co-host Kenny Mayne said, "Millions of years from now, when the sun no longer exists and cars can fly, the poets will write, 'John Elway is the greatest celebrity car driver ever.' He is the champion. Congratulations."
