Fisherman, 50, drowns in Clear Creek

Published June 25, 2007 at midnight

A fisherman drowned in Clear Creek after he was caught in the rushing waters and became trapped under a log.

The 50-year-old man was fishing with his girlfriend near the Georgetown Dam on Sunday when he was swept away at around 5:45 p.m.

The girlfriend tried to pull him from under the log but was unsuccessful, Colorado State Patrol Cpl. Rick Safe said.

He eventually became free of the log, either from the force of the current or by his own power, but his body was found 500 feet downstream around 7:30 p.m. by the Clear Creek County Swift Water Rescue team.

The victim, whose name has not been released pending notification of family, was declared dead at the scene.

Clear Creek sheriff's deputies urged people to use caution when near the creek because of the high water and swift currents. The water is also full of brush and debris, Safe said.
