Letters to the sports editor, Feb. 17

Colts' thanking of Christ appropriate

The prominently featured Reader’s Forum letter in the Rocky Mountain News Feb. 10 Sports section simply confirms my belief that suppression and political correctness in the media override the open expression of one’s spiritual beliefs.

Under the heading "Keep religion out of the victory speeches" Chad Van Haveren opens his letter saying that he was "offended" that the Colts owner and head coach used the victory to "spout their Christian beliefs."

Actually, it deeply saddens me, and I’m certain that Jim Isray and Tony Dungy would feel the same way, if they knew that their remarks had actually offended anyone. As unselfish men with virtue and class, they would sincerely regret causing any distress for others.

Who is Chad Van Haveren to decide what is appropriate or acceptable in terms of a person’s feelings and convictions? Does he feel that these comments should have been "bleeped out" of the television audio?

And, what’s your newspaper’s justification for featuring his judgmental jargon? It was no surprise that my Letter to the Editor following the Super Bowl failed to be published, because in it I praised the virtues of these two men and their willingness to express "their devotion, dedication and appreciation." I wonder why some people think that there is "bias" in today’s media?

Melo shouldn't be an All-Star

What a joke! Carmelo Anthony is not grown up enough to be an All-Star! Basketball is about much more than scoring. The whole Nuggets team needs to find out what "defense" means. What a sorry team. An All-Star makes his teammates better — Carmelo does not!

Not everyone believes Iverson is hurt

Mark my words, the "skipping" of the NBA All-Star Game by Mr. Iverson (and his staying home for numerous games previously) is just the beginning of a long, slow downhill relationship with the Nuggets. He will not fit into this team, nor should the attempt at integrating him into the Nuggets’ system ever have been attempted. (Drew Soicher notwithstanding!)

Allen fits into that group of prima donna athletes (and we all know who they are) that will not ever be part of a team system. They must be worshipped, or they can’t function.

Woods hurting golf

Did anyone ever consider that Tiger Woods is a guy who has become so prominent in golf that he is now a detriment to the golfing world? I have and do.

The International was a great event, loved the scoring system, always a good time and apparently the golfers who attended were treated better than at any other tournament on the tour.

The failure of this tournament was blamed on sponsorship, weather, scheduling conflicts, but the real culprit was Tiger Woods. Without him the sponsors didn’t want to be "on board" for the tournament, no other reason.

To me, it’s strange that he always finds time to go play for the Arabs in Dubai and at another tournament or event in the Middle East, but can’t seem to find time to play in Colorado. Does anyone think that money is involved? Of course money is involved. Tiger Woods is "for sale" to the highest bidder, plain and simple. Sad, the country that raised him and educated him is now a second-class citizen in his mind.

Not a fan of Mr. Woods and his money-loving ways.
