Legacy gets the last word versus Horizon

BROOMFIELD - During a pregame ceremony Friday to honor seniors on the Legacy girls basketball team, the favorite quote of star guard Melissa Jones was read aloud.
"When someone tells me I can't do something, well, that's all that needs to be said," the quote read.
Well, many believed something Jones and her Lightning teammates could not do was defeat fourth-ranked Horizon, which had walloped Legacy by 18 earlier in the season.
Maybe that's all that needed to be said.
Jones and No. 5 Legacy returned the favor, trouncing the Hawks 70-56 in the Class 5A Front Range League regular-season finale. And Jones played as if she had something to prove, racking up 34 points, 13 rebounds, six steals and six assists for the Lightning (20-3).
"We really don't have any excuses for the first time we played them," said the Baylor-bound Jones, whose team defeated Horizon for the first time in the seven-year history of the program. "We came out timid, we came out scared just because they're Horizon. But (Friday) was all about revenge."
The result leaves the teams with identical 15-1 league records and shares of the league title. It will be up to the Colorado High School Activities Association, which will announce seeds for the state tournament Sunday, to decide which team earns a top-four seed.
"For us, it doesn't really matter where we're seeded," said Legacy sophomore Mara Cosgrove, who chipped in 10 points. "We're ready to just play. If we have the advantage, that's nice, but a tournament goes a long way."
Horizon star Hannah Tuomi, who outplayed Jones in the first meeting, was saddled with early foul trouble and did not score until 3 minutes, 6 seconds remained in the first half. By then, Jones had notched 11 points and six rebounds.
Tuomi finished with 21 points and six rebounds, but 16 of the points came after halftime, which the Hawks (19-4) entered trailing 37-22. Horizon used a late rally to trim the deficit to 64-56 in the final minute but drew no closer.
"We couldn't hit a bucket to save our lives," Tuomi said. "Second of all, our defense was terrible. We played awful defense."
