Simons: Consignment, thrift stores get even thriftier
Published February 17, 2007 at midnight
Want to see some prices that are really low? Check out your neighborhood consignment and thrift stores.
For example?
The Dollar Days and Designer Clearance Sale runs through March 3 at the Junior League's Second Time Shop, 5042 E. Hampden Ave., in the Happy Canyon shopping center. Winter merchandise is half- price, and some items are just a buck. It culminates with a purse, shoe and jewelry extravaganza March 3. All proceeds will help the league do its work on behalf of children and others in need. For more information, call 303-789-4055 or go to www.jld.org.
Come snow or come shine, they're having outdoor bag sales from 10 a.m. to noon today at two neighboring Aurora consignment shops. At Celine's Designer Resale Boutique, 15254 E. Hampden Ave., 303-680-5544, all the designated items you can stuff into a plastic bag cost $10. At Little Tykes Trading Post, 15250 E. Hampden Ave., 720-870-7191, bags are $5.
Through Monday, everything is half-price for the Presidents' Day sale at Berna's Closet consignment, 12293 E. Iliff Ave., Aurora, www.bernascloset.com, 303-671- 6592. Even after the holiday, prom dresses are $10 and up, and there are equally good deals on jewelry, shoes, purses and accessories. Anyone who buys a formal is entered to win dinner for four at Maggiano's.
Through February, everything is half the marked price at the Assistance League of Denver Thrift Mart, 1331 E. Colfax Ave., 303-861- 2122, including clothing, furniture, housewares and books. Check the daily special, and watch for further reductions leading up to the spring changeover on March 31. Proceeds support the nonprofit organization's projects, including Operation School Bell, which provides clothing, books and health kits for children in low-income families.
It's not a consignment shop, so you'll just have to make do with low prices on new women's clothing during the PMS (prices monstrously slashed) sale at Rosey's, 7777 E. Hampden Ave., in Tamarac Square, 303-337-7870. Clearance items are marked down by 25 percent to 70 percent until they're gone.
Decorator accessories, pillows, bedding, lamps, prints and artificial plants from model homes from New Town Holdings are half the builder's cost at Joy's Consigned Furnishings, 5030 E. Hampden Ave., in the Happy Canyon shopping center, 303-757-7269. (It's right next to the Second Time Shop, so make a day of it.)
Prices on silk flowers, porcelain dolls and all other gift items in the store are reduced by 25 percent through February at Anna's Boutique, 1244 S. Sheridan Blvd., 303- 934-3322.
Books, paintings, maps and other literary stuff go on sale at the Denver Public Library's 24th annual Rare & Not-So-Rare Book and Art Auction Friday evening. Events kick off with a silent auction and preview of the live-auction items from 6 to 7:45 p.m. in the central library's Western history and genealogy department. Live bidding runs from 8 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $55 a person. denverlibrary.org, 720-865- 2051
