Boulder slaying victim ID'd as suspect's ex-wife

BOULDER – The victim of a fatal stabbing Monday has been identified as the ex-wife of a man arrested earlier on suspicion of first-degree murder.

Boulder police today said the victim is Laura Collette Swan, 36, also is known as Laura Collette Strauss.

Her ex-husband, Alfred Michael Strauss, is in the Boulder County Jail.

Police detectives say the couple divorced about a year and a half ago, but apparently had reconciled and were living together at 2970 18th St.

Strauss called police about 5:30 p.m. saying he had been involved in a domestic violence incident.

He later told police that Laura had come at him with a large butcher knife. He said they struggled, he got the knife away from her and stabbed her.

He said he had called his father in Pennsylvania to ask him what to do and his father told him he had to call the police.

Later, Strauss's father, Alfred Strauss, told police his son sounded "terrified." The elder Strauss also told police Laura had "mood swings" but he wasn't aware of any mental-health diagnosis.

At the police station, after he was asked whether he wanted to talk to an attorney but before he answered, Strauss said that "if hadn't been paying attention he would have been the one where she's sitting," according to the arrest report.

Strauss was to make his first court appearance this afternoon.
