Directories from governor's office printed in both English and Spanish

Published July 11, 2006 at midnight

Gov. Bill Owens' office has printed a handy guide with information about state agencies that includes this message:

Espero que ecuentre en este Directorio de Defensora de la Gobernación un recurso eficaz para obtener información y encontrar respuesta a sus inquietudes respecto al gobierno de Colorado.

Atentamente,

Bill Owens,

Gobernador

In other words:

I hope that you find this Governor's Advocate Corps Directory an effective resource to obtain information and answer your concerns associated with Colorado's government.

Sincerely,

Bill Owens,

Governor

The directories are printed in both English and Spanish and are available outside one of the governor's offices on the first floor of the Capitol.

Rep. Dave Schultheis, R-Colorado Springs, unsuccessfully floated a bill in the regular session to require that most government documents be printed only in English.

When told about the directory, he let out a short laugh.

He cautioned that he hadn't seen it but said he had concerns that the state prints directories in both languages.

"I think we probably need to set the example," he said. "Unfortunately, I think we all get caught up in wanting to be nice and compassionate."

Dan Hopkins, Owens' spokesman, said the booklets have been printed in both langugages for as long as he can remember, and he's worked for state government 23 years.
