Anschutz enters Hall of Fame for building efforts

Colorado businessman Philip Anschutz was inducted Monday into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta, N.Y., with former U.S. national team defenders Alexi Lalas and Carla Overbeck, and two-time Hermann Trophy winner Al Trost.

Anschutz, a former owner of Major League Soccer's Colorado Rapids, was inducted as a builder of the game, particularly after owning several MLS clubs and constructing soccer-specific stadiums in Carson, Calif., and Bridgeview, Ill.

Lalas appeared in 96 games for the United States, finishing with nine goals and 11 assists. Overbeck started every game for the United States at the 1991, 1995 and 1999 Women's World Cups. Trost scored two goals at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany.

D.C. United midfielder Domenic Mediate had surgery on his broken right leg and is out for the season.

U.S. focus on Nowitzki in worlds quarterfinals

The bracket says the United States will be facing Germany in the quarterfinals of the FIBA world championship Wednesday.

In truth, the United States is facing Dirk.

"Man, they have Dirk," U.S. point guard Chris Paul said.

Everyone is on a first-name basis with German forward Dirk Nowitzki, who has joined the ranks of the one-name basketball stars. There's Kobe, Shaq, LeBron and Yao. And Dirk.

Nowitzki leads the tournament's remaining players in scoring, at 24.5 points a game, and rebounding, at 10.3 a game.

"Obviously the U.S. is the favorite to win it all here, but you never know," Nowitzki said. "Every game has to be played."

The Atlanta Hawks exercised the contract options for the 2007-08 season on Josh Smith, Josh Childress and Marvin Williams, three former first-round draft picks.
