Alamosa takes control at 4A regional

Published February 12, 2006 at midnight

PUEBLO — The Colorado State Fair Event Center was the closest thing to the state wrestling tournament a wrester could find on Saturday.

One week before the real thing takes place at the Pepsi Center, the Event Center hosted the Region 4 tournaments for both Class 4A and 2A, the only place in Colorado where two regionals were hosted simultaneously.

With six matches running at once for the championship, third place and fifth place in both classes Saturday night, it was controlled chaos, with spontaneous eruptions of cheering breaking out all over the arena.

Most of it was for Alamosa and Rocky Ford.

The Mean Moose, considered by many to be the best wrestling team in any classification this season, ran away with the 4A regional, scoring 251.5 points, outdistancing two-time defending state champion Pueblo South (205.5) by 46 points.

Barring a huge upset for the Class 4A team title, the Mean Moose will win their first team title since 1999.

Led by two unbeaten wrestlers, junior Josh Hensley (41-0) at 140 pounds and senior Sonny Yohn (39-0) at 189 pounds, the Mean Moose crowned four regional champions.

Hensley's impressive regional performance included a pair of pins, a 17-0 technical fall, and a 5-0 victory over Adam Urenda of Pueblo South in the championship match. Yohn had three pins in the regional coming into Saturday's championship match. He beat Jake Burghardt of Sand Creek 25-8 in the final.

Yohn won a state title at 171 pounds last season and said he has finally adjusted to wrestling at the higher weight.

"It was hard to get used to at first,'' he said. "I'm still light for 189's. Up until this week I was weighing 185. I was about 188 pounds here.''

Pueblo South, the third-ranked team in 4A, also had four regional champions, including Mark Beaudry at 145 pounds. Beaudry (26-1) came back from a concussion in early December to win his fourth regional title and was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler.

Beaudry, who will try to win a second state title next weekend, beat Leif Olson of Sand Creek, 7-2 in the 145 pound final on Saturday. It was the third time the wrestlers have met this season, with Beaudry winning all three matchups.

"I was actually pretty nervous going into that match,'' he said. "It's always like something kind of new. Even though I've wrestled him twice before he's wrestled me tighter every time.''

Beaudry said the atmosphere at the Event Center is good preparation for next week's state tournament. Even the opening march, with the wrestlers walking out to music and the announcement of each match, feels familiar.

"It does feel like state, with this size of crowd,'' Beaudry said. "And that Parade of Champions. . . I hate it but it's a lot like state. It's like an hour long that you have to stand out there.''

Despite being a state champion with only one loss this season, Beaudry was seeded No. 3 at the regional. Under a new seeding procedure, the tournament was seeded according to the amount of victories each wrestler had accumulated coming in the tournament.

Rocky Ford, ranked No. 2 in Class 2A, was even more impressive than Alamosa. The Meloneers scored 309 points and had eight regional champions. Holly was a distant second with 116 points.

Next week the Meloneers will try to take down defending champion Paonia. Rocky Ford qualified 13 wrestlers, with another trying to qualify through a wrestle back late Saturday night.

"It will feel good taking our whole team,'' said Rocky Ford's Matt Maestas, who won a 2A state title at 112 last year and won a regional title at 119 pounds yesterday. "It will feel good to win the state championship with our whole team, too.''
