It's hard work to find this hideaway

Published May 22, 2004 at midnight

This map came from Emily Smith, who requested a photo of Hanging Lake. "It's one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen," she said.

After parking in the lot, east of Glenwood Springs on Interstate 70, I started up the trailhead. It's not a long hike, but it is steep and difficult. The place was breathtaking, but the weather was not great. It was overcast and windy at the time. But because of its natural beauty I was able to get a nice photo.

I used my Nikon D2H and my 35 mm lens. If you go, make sure to bring plenty of water and weather-protective gear because, if the weather changes, you're not going to get out of there fast. Wear good hiking boots, as you have to go through a number of rock fields, and good ankle support is important.
