Disease turns up at South Dakota game ranch
Published August 23, 2002 at midnight
Chronic wasting disease has again been found in a game ranch elk herd in South Dakota, the first confirmed case in at least five years.
Dr. Sam Holland, South Dakota's state veterinarian, said the 3-year-
old bull elk was raised on a Custer County ranch adjacent to a ranch where the disease was found in 1997.
The remaining animals in the herd will be killed and their carcasses burned, Holland said Thursday.
"It was disappointing to find it in this herd," Holland said. "After going that long, we were kind of taking a breath of relief and saying, 'Now we are comfortable.' And yet, we didn't stop surveillance."
Due to a state ban on shipping captive elk for five years after possible exposure, no elk left the ranch.
